Background of the Study
Ethnic divisions have long been a prominent feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, influencing electoral dynamics and outcomes across various regions. Zaria Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, known for its ethnic diversity, is a microcosm of this broader national issue. The LGA is home to various ethnic groups, including the Hausa, Fulani, and several minority groups, whose political behaviors are often shaped by ethnic identity, loyalty, and rivalry (Ogunyemi, 2023). These divisions have historically played a significant role in determining the success of political candidates and parties, with ethnic affiliation often being prioritized over policy or ideology during elections.
The impact of ethnic divisions on electoral outcomes in Zaria is a subject of considerable debate. Some argue that ethnic loyalty can skew voter behavior, leading to biased electoral outcomes, while others suggest that such divisions merely reflect broader socio-political preferences. The study will focus on the 2023 general elections in Zaria LGA, Kaduna State, analyzing voter behavior, party strategies, and electoral outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and difficulty in distinguishing between ethnic loyalty and other factors influencing voter behavior.
